Tregony Contemporary Presents: A Masterclass in Observational Painting

About Tregony Contemporary

For over a decade, Tregony Contemporary has built a strong reputation for championing observation-led painting, curating exhibitions of depth and rigour, and nurturing a vibrant community of artists, collectors, and writers both in the UK and internationally. This foundation uniquely positions us to create a workshop programme that is both culturally rich and artistically ambitious.

Launching in 2026 a new programme of high-level, immersive workshops led by accomplished painters represented by the gallery. Our aim is to create a workshop experience that is artist-led, and thoughtfully curated, offering a level of depth, focus, and refinement that complements the gallery’s ethos and distinguishes the programme within Cornwall’s creative landscape. Tregony Contemporary In Residence, will be the foundation for a regular programme of workshops, establishing a distinctive space in the UK for high-quality, art-centred residential experiences.

Workshop Description

Join us for a a week long immersive artistic experience led by award winning artist Erin Raedeke at Caerhays, located on the south coast of Cornwall. Caerhays Castle and Gardens overlooks the stunning Porthluney Beach with direct access to the South West Coast Path. Caerhays has been owned since 1860 by the Williams family, and is worldrenowned for its award winning National Magnolia Collection and spectacular spring woodland gardens. The estate offers an exceptional environment: a historic castle, sweeping gardens, coastal vistas, and a range of highend accommodation. There are direct flights from Dublin and London Gatwick airports to Newquay, Cornwall and regular train service from London Paddington Station to St Austell, Cornwall.

The workshop will focus on perceptual, observational painting in one of Cornwall’s designated areas of outstanding natural beauty. We are offering a rare opportunity for you to deeply engage with your painting practice in the intimate setting of the Caerhays Estate.

Before leaving for the workshop, Erin will schedule a one on one 30 minute zoom session with each participant to discuss goals and areas to focus on during the workshop.

WorkshopDescriptionGrid1

Immersed in the English countryside, during this workshop, Erin will introduce the painting sessions with a visual presentation that presents and outlines a particular daily focus, colour and light will be our guide. We will learn the language of colour that will describe each of our unique perceptions of the landscape. Using a palette nearly void of earth tones, but rather made up of potent colours, such as phthalo green and quinacridone red, we will explore these colours strengths as well as how to use them to create sensitive, nuanced colours, that still retain their vitality.

This workshop explores broader and more experimental approaches to landscape painting. While remaining grounded in observation and colour, the emphasis shifts towards interpretation, structure, and personal response.
Participants will be encouraged to question familiar conventions of landscape painting, including scale, orientation, and composition, and to explore how landscape can intersect with other genres such as still life or interior space. Colour remains central throughout, but is used more intuitively and expressively to support individual ways of seeing and working.

Demonstrations, individual guidance, sharing her expertise in colour mixing and each participant will receive their own set of colour wheel cards hand painted by Erin to accompany their artistic journey. This workshop will continue to influence your creative journey long afterwards.
