Painting is an interaction between myself, the landscape and the paint. It is not always equal – sometimes one element will dominate over the others. Each painting becomes a kind of reverse excavation, building up and scraping back texture, layering with glazes and scumbles, letting accidents happen, until there is a complex surface that expresses the mystery and energy of the natural world. I am not trying to make a representation, but to allow the viewer to recognise something of their own experience in the image. I have been influenced by my travels, especially through Spain which I visited often as a child.
Its Moorish gardens left a deep impression on me, and I go back over and over again to immerse myself in those little paradises. But I also love the wild landscapes of Britain, and have lived in Devon, Oxfordshire, Cheshire, Scotland and now Cornwall.
