James Bland | Edmond Praybe

Still Looking brings together new paintings by James Bland and Edmond Prabye, two distinct practices rooted in observation, where sustained looking remains central to the making of a painting.

For James Bland, direct observation provides the starting point, but the paintings often move beyond the immediate subject. Memory, atmosphere and personal experience enter as the work develops, allowing figures, interiors, landscape and still life to sit somewhere between what is seen and what is remembered.

Edmond Prabye works through a quieter process of refinement and reduction. In his portraits and still lifes, familiar subjects are distilled into carefully balanced relationships of light, colour, shape and space. His paintings are measured and restrained, yet retain a strong sense of physical presence.

Although their approaches are very different, both artists share a belief in painting as an evolving process, one of looking, questioning, revising and discovering.
