Every painting begins with an encounter. What follows is a process of looking, questioning, revising and responding, a dialogue between artist and subject that continues long after the first marks have been made. For both James Bland and Edmond Praybe, painting is never a fixed or straightforward act. As Praybe describes it, it is "an active, ongoing, incomplete state”, a process of continual discovery rather than the pursuit of a definitive conclusion.

Still Looking reflects this shared understanding of painting as something that evolves over time. While both artists work from direct observation, their paintings travel in distinctly different directions.
